Meet the Photographer

Hey, my name is Josh Hall

I am a sports photographer based in Spearfish, South Dakota, whose work is rooted in a lifelong connection to athletics, particularly hockey. I began playing hockey at the age of four and continued through high school, developing an intimate understanding of the sport that now informs his photographic approach. His experience as an athlete allows him to anticipate moments on the ice and capture imagery that reflects both the physical intensity of competition and the emotional weight carried by players and fans.

I began experimenting with photography in middle school and discovered his passion for sports photography during high school through photojournalism assignments. After photographing his first basketball game, I became drawn to the challenge of documenting live events and telling stories in fast-paced environments. I am currently pursuing a degree in photography at Black Hills State University, where his practice has expanded beyond sports to include studio, commercial, and graphic design work.

My photography is regularly used by Black Hills State University Athletics and the Rapid City Rush for marketing, social media, and promotional materials, and his work has been exhibited in galleries in Spearfish and Rapid City, South Dakota. Over the past two years, I placed 9th in the Division II Photo of the Year, and 11th in the College Division in the College Sports Communicators Creative & Digital Design Contest. I have also won a Gold American Advertising Award, as well as a Silver award. I am particularly interested in capturing moments of emotion surrounding the action, celebrations, tension, and quiet in-between moments that reveal the human side of sports.
